Can you switch an already activated AT&T SIM card into an iPhone?

My dad is due for an upgrade and can get an iPhone at a discount. However, my phone recently broke and is not due until May. He's fine with ordering the phone for HIMSELF (due to the discount) and then switching SIM cards with me, allowing him to keep his old phone and me to put my SIM card into the iPhone. I already have the unlimited data plan, and I was wondering if switching the SIM cards will work.

Yes, it works. I had a mobile phone guy at best buy take the SIM out of my Nokia and put it into the iPhone for me, and felt pretty sheepish when I saw how easy it was. I could have done it myself and saved him the trouble.
