Using a Compact Digital Camera and Tripod?

This may sound like a stupid question, but how exactly do you use a Compact Digital Camera with a Tripod? I mean, how do you get the shutter to release itself?

Self timer on camera or a remote control - more common on Dig Video Cameras.

If this is an important feature - make sure it's a feature of your buying choice.

Also - make sure you get a decent tripod - some are very good - some are poor. Lightweight, adjustable, folds away, adaptable feet and able to take the weight of your camera/vid cam.

And expensive doesn't mean good ! !
