Why did a lady walk past the Halifax building society and scan a barcode displayed in the window?

It was after 5pm and the bank was closed but still had lights on a staff inside. This lady was walking along through the shopping centre, got a scanning gun (the wireless kind used in shops) out of her handbag, scanned a barcode in the window of the Halifax and then carried on her way. I went up to look at the barcode sticker and it said RBS Halifax and the name of the town and shopping centre.

I'm very curious as to what the purpose of this was.
It was a big scanner. You don't carry something that size around for fun

Dysters are used by others too Like Post Men. When the collect mail there is a barcode on the inside of the post box which is scanned.

This is quite regular for banks to have dyster patrols although they are mostly unseen Securicor operate a plain clothed partrol. There is a Natwest bank opposite my office and there are around 8 patrols per day.
